A Modern Grace Kelly - BY MAXWELL

Grace Kelly is a true fashion icon, setting forth a new sense of fashion awareness during her stardom which women today still yearn to emulate and embody. Her looks, attitude and styles have withstood the test of time, recently being resurrected and set forth on the catwalks of spring/summer 2012 collections by dominating designers and brands.

Capitalizing on the trend, Toronto's TIFF Lightbox presented an exhibit over the holiday season on Grace Kelly called From Movie Star To Princess. To coincide with the exhibit, TIFF created a contest to modernize the style of Grace Kelly in A Modern Grace: The Kelly Style Challenge. I saw this as an opportunity to expanded my knowledge of the fashion culture of the 50’s era and set forth a modern rendition of Graces classic looks.

Grace Kellys ability to radiate elegance in any setting was my inspiration when choosing model Sydney Bicknell to recreate my rendition of the modern Grace Kelly look. The use of fur, jewels, dark cat eye style frames and harnessing her monumental head scarf, while changing its application, Sydney was able to channel her inner Grace and exude the confidence and style she possessed.

I captured this modern rendition of an icon using a Cannon Rebel T2I with a Standard 18-55mm Lens. The shoot was conducted over two sessions to capture the various sides to Grace Kellys style, glamor and leisure wear. I incorporated the colors of fall and natural light on a gray day to best depict the timeless, regal manner and elegance of Grace. However, when it came time to photograph leisure wear, I shot indoors, using a single hard light to capture these edgier, more modernized looks. Through combining and incorporating both Sydney's and my personal knowledge, style & skills, we were successfully able to represent A Modern Grace Kelly
