More is more in the 21st century information overload. Select designers capture this modern hyper-culture through maximalist printed textiles - integrating them into garments which, like the abundant images facing us each day, cannot be ignored. The exhibit "Riotious Colour, Daring Patterns: Fashions + Textiles 18th to 21st Centuries" currently being held at the ROM showcases pieces by Gaultier, Galliano, and Jeremy Laing (former Ryerson student) among others who revel at incorporating statement prints into their fashion designs. Below are some of the pieces which stood out to me. The main challenge when photographing the pieces was trying to reduce the glare and reflection on the glass in front of many objects. I highly recommend you go see the exhibit before it ends in April. The ROM is free for students on Tuesdays!
Iconic newspaper printed dress by John Galliano for Dior.
Renaissance printed fashion designs by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Crystalline textile by Jeremy Laing.
